The Beauty of Boring

Much of life is lived in the “in-between.” In between the highs and lows, in between the big events.

At times, it may be considered mundane, but even the mundane is worthy of appreciation. The task is to find moments of inspiration within those periods.

A resurfaced memory. A show of genuine affection. Uncontrollable laughter. Nature’s wonders. Unexpected beauty.

Only the practice of presence allows for the reception of those inspired points of time. And more often than not, it’s the ordinary that feeds the soul.

Like a flower needs sunlight and water, it is nourished by basics.

Unclaimed Joy

Imagine inviting a guest to your home. However, upon their arrival, you lock the deadbolt.

This is the relationship many of us have with joy. We say we want more. We try to attain it. Yet, the incessant striving is a barrier to actually experiencing it. Consequently, we miss the ways in which it shows up.

Joy isn’t a reward for achievement. It appears with the practice of presence.

Like any other guest, we must decide to let joy in.

Revenge

When you feel wronged, payback seems like a reasonable response. Unfortunately, it diverts the powerful energy of focused intention.

Instead of channeling all your energy to your progress, some goes towards your opponent’s downfall.

Whatever goal you ultimately reach will be a much lesser version of what could have been.

Their misery is only a consolation prize if you still don’t get to where you really want to be.

Unraveling

In times of uncertainty, the mind will use its imagination to spin the most miraculous tales. Unfortunately, if ego is running the show, those tales result in more worry than wonder.

To counter the discomfort, the ego will then construct a narrative that it can cling to. No matter how illogical that narrative may be, it provides the measure of certainty the ego craves.

As a result, it becomes a stance that the holder of it will never question. That is because deep inside, they know it can’t hold up to the slightest amount of scrutiny.

Like a snag in a sweater, they don’t want to pull on it because the whole thing may unravel and uncertainty will be right there waiting.

Spirit can tolerate the unknown. Ego denies and conceals.

On the Mend

It is easy to point at and judge another’s transgressions. While dissecting another’s behavior can be interesting and possibly enlightening, most often it is little more than a temporary distraction.

What is more challenging is to look within. Though your own behavior may or may not be as extreme, there may be some areas of neglect which need attending. Get to them, before they get to you.

Tweet this: You have to mind it to mend it.
