To feel empathy for another requires some level of connection.
Unfortunately, many of us look for that connection only at the level of identity. As a result, we can only extend “compassion” to those reminding us of who we used to be, who we are, and/or who we aspire to be.
We reserve it for those we consider equals. Individuals outside of those parameters receive pity at best and scorn at worst.
True compassion arises from the level of the soul. What is recognized is the shared humanity, not shared identity.
